Did you know? Lowland areas below 800 meters in Taiwan are important homes for many wild animals. But these places also face problems like road building, broken habitats, light pollution, and human disturbance. These changes may seem far away from daily life, but they quietly affect where animals can live. Animals such as the masked palm civet, leopard cat, pangolin, purple crow butterfly, pheasant-tailed jacana, black kite, wild hare, and Eurasian otter are all affected.
Start with Reading and Help Kids Understand Biodiversity
The Good Neighbor Foundation presents the palm-size picture book Welcome! The Lowland Animal Chat Room. Through fun stories and conversations between animal characters, children can learn by reading and interacting. Kids will:
•Get to know Taiwan’s local lowland ecosystems
•Understand what “biodiversity” is and why habitats matter
•Learn to protect animal friends through small actions in daily life
For example, turning off the lights for one hour to reduce light pollution gives nocturnal animals a safe time to be active.
Four Key Ways to Protect Nature (Kids Can Do These Too)
■ Turn off the lights for one hour
Reduce light pollution, save energy, lower carbon emissions, and help animals that are active at night.
■ Be friendly to habitats
Learn about nature reserves, eco-education parks, and why animal crossings are important.
■ No hunting, no feeding
Keep a safe distance from wild animals and respect how they live.
■ Share what you learn
Start by understanding and sharing the right ideas about conservation, so caring actions can keep going.
